Whether we have a disability, or not, we all want to be the best version of ourselves that we can be. Sometimes that takes journeying with others, who can walk alongside us, in anticipation of growth for our future. Growth and success is shared by everybody. When one of us achieves something, we can all celebrate it; like an exhibition of people’s creativity?! Through the writing of music, we can learn more about ourselves and others.
This song is about taking your destiny in your own hands, and making a name for yourself. We’ve all got something to say, and I’ve had enough of waiting for the opportunity to speak; I’m just going to speak about who I am and my many dreams. I’ve dreamed of writing my own song for a long, long time and here it is! I was very nervous about rapping and putting a new song out there, but I’ve done it and I couldn’t be more proud.
I was inspired to write these lyrics when I was in Brunswick watching the ‘canvas of humanity’ pass me by one day. There were hipsters and young people walking around, all wearing really colourful clothes and just expressing themselves freely. It was a lovely sight, of people who were safe to be their true selves, in all of their own personal uniqueness. There are people all around us, subduing themselves for the sake of other people’s expectations. I just love seeing people bring colour to humanity, and when they feel free enough to do so.
As soon as I first heard this song, I felt a connection with it. It reminded me of growing up in Heathmont with my friends. We would go on make-believe adventures around our school and each other’s houses. It was a golden time in my life. This was the first song that I recorded as part of the Songwriting and Recording Program at Sparrow, so I was really nervous but gave it a go anyway. I’m very proud of how it has come out.
This song is a comment about greed and how it is dividing the world. There are billionaires who are trying to control the masses through manipulating mass media and feeding the social media machine, while filling their own bank accounts. They do this without any consideration for humanity; JUST think on the amount of times we are asked to contribute to societies rights, eg. education? The song is also a tribute to my hero, Martin Luther King.
I wrote this song because I’m frustrated with people bullying and criticising others for their craft. The only person that knows the full story of a creative piece, is the creator themselves. I know that no one knows my full story, like I do, and I know that no one will ever know the full story. Even I don’t know the full story, because it’s in fragments. What frustrates me more, is when people criticise other people’s experience, often through bullying and criticism; and it’s not ok. And that’s where karma is involved. And that’s why playing with fire is dangerous, not only as the accused, but also the accuser. Both parties can be damaged, no matter how the game is played out.
I’ve always liked this song since I heard it in school. It was played to us in a portable classroom by our teacher in 1971. The sound was just incredible, and I’d never heard anything like it. David Bowie has always been a unique and respected artist by millions of people all over the world. He didn’t fit neatly into any genre, but created his own sound and drew upon many influences. It was a great experience to recreate a version of this song from scratch and give it my own interpretation.
Passerine is one of my all-time favourite songs. I really like the lyrics because it reminds me of history and family; even though I don’t know what the song it is really about, that is just the vibe I’m getting it and I love it. I can hear history, family and freedom and it’s like it’s telling an intense story with a lot emotion.
An Unlikely Pair is a song about Australian comedians Hamish and Andy; but not as you know them! This song is set in an alternative universe, where Hamish and Andy were living in 1540AD in England. Hamish is a court jester, and Andy is the Prince of the whole Kingdom. The song tells the tale of them teaming up, finding love, and becoming well known entertainers and even … unlikely heroes of war.
Having mental illness, is as debilitating as having no limbs; and some days the emotional pain, is more than overwhelming. I’ve always loved Metallica, so I used the basis of their song ‘One’ to create this track, but bringing my own spin to it. Music has been a powerful tool and lifeline for me for the last 30 years. It brings me perspective, contentment, solace and allows me to express who I am, what I am and will be.
This song is about my Grandmother, Lola. She passed away in late 2024. She was a big influence on me, and I loved her very much. She was both blunt and kind at the same time. You knew you were hearing the honest truth when she spoke to you. This song is me honouring her, in the way that I feel is needed, as her life should not forgotten. I really hope that you can hear my love of her while listening to this song. It’s also the first song that I’ve done, when I’m the lead singer – so a big first for me!
